Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. ~Leo Buscaglia

Happy Women’s Day!

Today, on March 8th, the world celebrates 100 years of progress towards gender equality. International Women’s Day, however, is both a day to celebrate and a day to draw attention to the challenges that remains before gender equality is truly realised.
International Women's Day has been observed since in the early 1900's, a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies. Great unrest and critical debate was occurring amongst women. Women's oppression and inequality was spurring women to become more vocal and active in campaigning for change. Then in 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights.
In accordance with a declaration by the Socialist Party of America, the first National Woman's Day (NWD) was observed across the United States on 28 February. Women continued to celebrate National Woman’s Day on the last Sunday of February until 1913.

Since its birth in the socialist movement, International Women's Day has grown to become a global day of recognition and celebration across developed and developing countries alike. For decades, IWD has grown from strength to strength annually.

IWD is now an official holiday in Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, China (for women only), Cuba, Georgia, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Madagascar (for women only), Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Nepal (for women only), Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zambia.
The new millennium has witnessed a significant change and attitudinal shift in both women's and society's thoughts about women's equality and emancipation. We do have female astronauts and prime ministers, school girls are welcomed into university, women can work and have a family, women have real choices. And so the tone and nature of IWD has, for the past few years, moved from being a reminder about the negatives to a celebration of the positives. So  great improvements have been made.

Annually, on 8 March, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements.
Many global corporations have also started to more actively support IWD by running their own internal events and through supporting external ones. For example, on 8 March search engine and media giant Google some years even changes its logo on its global search pages. Year on year IWD is certainly increasing in status.

On this day it is customary for men to give the women in their lives – mothers, wives, girlfriends, daughters, colleagues, etc. – flowers and small gifts. In some countries (such as Bulgaria and Romania) it is also observed as an equivalent of Mother's Day, where children also give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers.

Today, many events are held by women's groups around the world, many governments and organizations around supporting the  IWD.

Some of The Most Famous Women in the World
Women have gained worldwide fame for all sorts of different reasons. Some are famous because for their athletic prowess. Others are famous for their beauty. And many are famous within their niche area of interest. It would be impossible to define the single most famous woman in the entire world since there are so many different paths to fame. But there are certainly some women who stand out above the rest for their success and achievements.
Following are eight of the most famous women from different parts of the world:
1. Mother Teresa. She was arguably the most famous woman in the entire world during her lifetime and she continues to be famous since her death. She is one of those women who will go down in the annals of history for the change that she brought to the world simply by living her life in a way that she believed was right. In creating an order whose members tended to the orphaned, sick, and dying among the poorest of the poor in India and, eventually, worldwide, Mother Teresa, born Agnes Bojaxhiu in what is now Macedonia, inspired others as a model of service and extreme goodness.
 2. Oprah Winfrey. There are many famous female celebrities in America but the one who is recognized by everyone is Oprah Winfrey. She gets talked about by celebrity gossip hounds, female entrepreneurs and men who love to hate her. And her fame has persisted for years upon years.
3. Hillary Clinton. At the current time, one of the most famous in the world is Hillary Clinton. She has gained a lot of attention since she started running for president and the rest of the world is paying attention to see what is going to happen with the presidential race. If she ends up winning then she would, of course, be the first female president in the United States which would definitely up the ante on her lasting fame.
4. Calamity Jane. This Wild West woman is long gone but she is still revered today by pioneering women who look to the females of the past for their strength. She ignored all of the boundaries of her gender and lived a life of freedom.
5. Roma Mitchell. This woman was Australia's first female Supreme Court judge and then the first female governor in Australia.
6. Princess Diana. Her legacy of charm and charity endures, especially her campaigns for acceptance of AIDS victims and against land mines. We remember most the uniting effect of the world's mourning her sudden and shocking death.
7. Coco Chanel. This female fashion designer continues to be a household name since so many people continue to wear the fragrance made by her company.
8. Margaret Thatcher. When it comes to women who are famous for their politics, the leader to date has been Margaret Thatcher.

Of course, there are many other famous women throughout the world, women who make a difference.. here are some articles about famous women who changed our world:
